Shabby Chic

Shabby chic interior design favors well loved and well worn items that add whimsical charm to a space. This style boasts painted and distressed furnishings that have a “collected over time” feel to them. Some of the items may be actual antiques and some may be reproductions made to resemble antiques. There is a definite cottage influence that plays on the whimsical feel of this style and differentiates it from other defined styles.

Although not a authentic period style, there is a significant French feel to shabby chic. The color white is used copiously in fabrics like cotton and linen as well as in furnishings and architecture. The faux finishing of furniture and purposely staining or bleaching fabrics adds to the aged, worn look.  Pastel colors and soft earth tones can also often add embellishment to a shabby chic space.

Furniture items like settes, armoires, pie safes and cupboards often make appearances and add to the cottage charm of the style. The feminine feel of shabby is further enhanced by the curves of the furnishings and the favor of floral accents wood details, fabrics, and wall decor. Soft fabrics enhance the relaxed style and cottage comfort.
