Where to Use Wood Wall Paneling in Your Home

Guest blog by Robert S.

Wood paneling conjures up pictures of dark and stuffy drawing rooms that look and feel oppressive. The truth is completely different. Modern wood wall paneling is a fantastically versatile wall finish that can be whatever character you choose.

From bright and airy to warm and cozy, wooden wall panels have come a long way from the dark and broody mahogany-clad rooms that we usually associate with wall panels.

If you haven’t considered wooden wall panels for your home, then this article might just sway your decision. Let’s start by considering some of the benefits of wooden wall panels.

Benefits of using wood panels in the home

Modern wood paneling looks amazing. Gone are the dark and dreary panels that sucked the character out of rooms. Instead, wood panels bring atmosphere, life, and bags of character to any room.

But looks aren’t everything, and the beauty of wood paneling is more than just skin deep. Here are some of the main benefits of using wood panels in your home.

1. Added sound and thermal insulation

With heating bills soaring, this advantage has taken on a higher level of prominence. Wood is a natural thermal insulator that can cut heating bill costs. It also has fantastic sound insulation properties, which is another huge plus.

2. Eco-friendly

We are all acutely aware of the need to stop wasting precious resources. Wood panels from reputable companies use materials that are from sustainable sources and don’t contain harmful chemicals or plastics.

In fact, some companies use wood that has already had a useful life! Old railway sleepers, naturally fallen trees, floorboards and even oak that has been preserved in peat bogs for thousands of years are all examples of repurposed material that is used in wood wall paneling.

3. Wood paneling is incredibly versatile

The sheer variety of panel types and materials means that whatever your taste or requirements are, there are wood panels that fit the bill. From light and modern with geometric designs that create stunning effects, to retro classics with a modern twist, there are literally thousands of designs to choose from.

This makes it a perfect medium that can be used in any room, with many designs and finishes perfect for smaller rooms and trickier spaces.

4. Wood panels are easy to install

No specialized tools are required to fit wood panels. They can be easily installed on any surface with a minimum of fuss. Better yet, for rough and even walls, wood panels make getting the perfect finish easy.

5. Long-lasting and durable

Wood paneling is manufactured by that fussiest of material developers – nature. Walk into any old manor house, and chances are that the wood paneling that adorns the walls is centuries old.

Modern wood paneling is no different. It is built to last. With nothing more than a little care and attention from time to time, wood paneling can continue to delight for decades.

What rooms and features can benefit from wood paneling

Such is the variety of wood panels on the market; there isn’t a room in the house that can be transformed with this wonder material. Here are just some examples and ideas of where wood paneling can be used to transform dull plaster walls into something wonderful.

1. Small rooms

As mentioned already, when we think of wood paneling, the first thought is usually dark mahogany-clad walls that seem to shrink the size of a room. This doesn’t take account of the plethora of designs and styles that are now on the market that can be used to turn small spaces into a bright and airy environment.

Of course, light woods like pine can be used. But for that extra special finish, have a look at teak root wood, this brings all the beauty and hardness of teak to your walls, but teak root wood has a far lighter finish – perfect for smaller rooms.

2. Bedrooms

Perhaps the bedroom isn’t a room that we usually associate with wood paneling, but wood is a perfect material for bedroom walls. From a practical point of view, the excellent acoustic dampening properties of wood help to keep unwanted noises from disturbing precious sleep.

But there is something magical about the layers and textures that wood brings to otherwise boring walls. This can really bring bedrooms to life. Rustic designs with lots of texture that are enhanced with clever and understated lighting can create stunning effects that make bedtimes and Sunday morning breakfast in bed that bit more special.

3. Feature walls

Creating a stunning feature wall with wood paneling is super easy. This is the perfect way to bring some character to a room. Textured finishes along a single wall can make the perfect focal point.

It is also the perfect finish for existing features like chimney breasts, alcoves, or even in place of a headboard.

4. Breakfast bars

Along similar lines, wood paneling is the perfect medium for enhancing the appearance of breakfast bars or similar surfaces. Again, panels that use a textured finish will look stunning when used on breakfast bars. This can bring a beautiful and almost rhythmic appearance right into the heart of a kitchen or dining area.

5. Ceilings

Such is the versatility of wood paneling that it goes way beyond just being a material that is suited for walls and vertical surfaces only. Ceilings can be brought to life with the added texture and warmth that wood paneling provides.

Don’t be afraid to experiment either. Wood paneling on the ceiling can be used to accentuate areas in much the same way as using it as a feature does for walls.

Summing Up

Whether you are aiming for a classical and retro look or planning a chic and modern room, wood panels are a fantastic option. The only limit is your imagination!
